Campobello
is an island paradise located adjacent to Lubec,
Maine, the easternmost point of land in the United
States. Campobello is connected to the US via the Roosevelt Memorial
International Bridge, which spans the channel known as The
Narrows.
SunriseOnCampobello.com properties for sale include large,
oceanfront lots located at several points around Campobello Island.
At Derby
Point (4+/- acres), the lot looks out on the
fishing village of Lubec, Maine across The Narrows, where tides
in excess of twenty feet are seen. The Mulholland Light, Johnson
Bay filled with working fishing boats, several islands and the city
of Eastport on the horizon, can be seen from this property -- the
former site of the Lubec & Campobello ferry. At Meadow
Brook Cove (2 +/- acres), the lot looks across the
cove to Grand
Manan & the sunrise, with a pebble beach
below -- a safe haven for many schooners in years gone by. One can
imagine the sea shanties, songs of sailors & fishermen of years
gone by, blown on the wind. Red Head
looks east to the sunrise, with views of The Wolves from the high,
rocky bluff. Below is a working herring weir. Nancy
Head -- a local landmark by sea -- stands tall, a rough
rock-bound cliff with views to the east of The Wolves and its lighthouse,
as well as a traditional herring weir immediately below, just offshore.
Bunker
Hill Road is located on a private, sheltered tidal
harbour within minutes of Cobscook Bay, waters favored by whales,
seals, eagles and more--The Gateway to the Bay of Fundy.
Campobello
Island
The
shoreline of Campobello Island is much like that of Maine, largely
rocky, with many high headlands offering sweeping, panoramic views
across the Bay of Fundy to Grand
Manan, the chain of small islands known as
The
Wolves and the shoreline of southern New Brunswick,
interspersed with sheltered, pebble-covered beaches. Migrating
whales
spend their summers just offshore, and several whale watch cruises
depart from Head
Harbour at the northern end of the island.
Seals
feed and frolic in The Narrows and along the Campobello
shore, as eagles nest throughout the large wooded areas & shores
on the island. Occasionally, a moose can be seen swimming the channel
from Lubec to the island. There is excellent sport fishing in the
surrounding waters, as well as interesting sites & a variety
of sea and bird life in the surrounding area.
Lighthouses
The Campobello Island
area is blessed with a wealth of lighthouses. There are two Lights
on the island: East
Quoddy Light at Head Harbour and Mulholland
Light . The Channel
Light is located between Lubec and Campobello Island.
From almost any point along Campobello's shore, other lighthouses
are visible -- on Grand
Manan Island; West
Quoddy Head Light in Lubec, Maine; and several across
Passamaquoddy Bay from Deer Island to Black's
Harbour on the New Brunswick mainland. The varied design
and generally easy access to the lighthouses makes them a delight
to view or visit.
Franklin
D Roosevelt and his family summered on the island for many years,
as seen in the movie Sunrise at Campobello, and his Summer
Cottage estate has been preserved as part of Roosevelt
Campobello International Park. The FDR Park boasts outstanding hiking
trails and scenic vistas with picnic tables attainable by well-maintained
park roads, a golf course and a restaurant. There is a thriving
commercial fishing industry on the island, bringing in catches as
diverse as lobster, scallop and urchin. Several sheltered harbors
provide space for docking private and commercial boats. There is
a pharmacy, a grocery store and several restaurants on the island,
as well as most major services available over the bridge in Lubec.
The border crossing is relaxed and uncrowded, even at the height
of the summer tourist season. A ferry connects Campobello Island
to the New Brunswick mainland at Black's Harbour, via
picturesque Deer
Island.
